Tamara Lewis Johnson

Yoga Instructor

Montgomery County, Maryland

I have been a teacher of hatha yoga for 18 years. I took my first  Hatha yoga class while in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley in 1985. I have practiced a variety of yoga styles including but not limited to Hatha, Ashtanga, Anusara and Amrit styles of yoga. I also have taken numerous dance classes over the years with the bulk of my expertise in African dance. While in Berkeley, California, I was a dancer with Balle Sabaa, where I practiced African dance and modern dance. I currently teach classes at Coffield Recreation Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, and I have taught yoga classes at the Takoma Park Recreation Center, in Takoma Park, Maryland and  Royal Fitness and Nutrition, in Bethesda, Maryland.

I am a registered yoga teacher at the 200 hour level with the Yoga Alliance. I received my teacher training Level One certificate from the Amrit Yoga Institute in 2004. The Amrit Yoga institute is a yoga teacher training school that is registered with the Yoga Alliance, the licensing and accrediting body for yoga teacher instruction.

I am interested in adapting yoga for diverse populations such as people of color, seniors, youth, people living with chronic illness and yoga for runners. Yoga is a way of life for me and I am interested in sharing my integrated style of yoga with diverse communities.

I am a resident of Takoma Park, Maryland and a native Washingtonian. I hold two Masters' Degrees, one in Business Administration and one in Public Health, with a concentration in Health Services Management, from the University of California, Berkeley as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and two sons.
